Bapu Bazaar Jaipur: Street Stalls, Thele and Shopping Guide

Most guides to Bapu Bazaar talk about its shops. But walk through the market on any evening and you will notice that half the action is on the pavement: bangle sellers under the arches, mojari carts, souvenir stalls, chaat and kulfi thele, and seasonal stalls that change with every festival.
This guide is about that side of Bapu Bazaar. You will find what the footpath stalls sell, where to eat, which stalls appear in which season, and how to shop smartly from street vendors. The practical basics (timings, weekly off and how to reach) are covered too.

Where Is Bapu Bazaar and When Is It Open?
Bapu Bazaar runs along the southern edge of Jaipur's Walled City, between Sanganeri Gate and New Gate, a short walk from MI Road. It is named after Mahatma Gandhi, fondly called Bapu, and its shops stand in neat rows under matching pink arches. Johari Bazaar begins at Sanganeri Gate, and Nehru Bazaar continues from New Gate towards Ajmeri Gate.
Most shops open between 10:30 and 11 AM and close around 9 to 9:30 PM. Tuesday is the weekly off for most shops, and for neighbouring Nehru Bazaar too.
The street stalls follow the crowd. They are busiest during the late afternoon, around 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm when the shoppers descend upon the arcades and the lights turn on.
What the Footpath Stalls of Bapu Bazaar Sell (on-ground)
Street vendors sell small everyday and gift items along the pavement and under the arches, sometimes at cheaper prices than that of the shops behind.
Bangles and jewellery Glass bangles and oxidised earrings, anklets, bindis, hair clips are displayed in bright rows.
Mojaris and juttis Stalls and carts of men's, women's and child's footwear embroidered on.
Bags and small accessories Embroidered potli bags, wallets/key chains, cloth purses, mobile pouches.
Socks, handkerchiefs and dupattas of socks, handkerchiefs and dupattas piled on folding tables.
Souvenirs and toys popular tourist and child items such as Kathputli puppets, small elephants and camels, fridge magnets and wooden toys.
The stalls get changed frequently, and many traders establish their stall in a similar location each day. If you enjoyed a stall, write the name of a nearby shop to help you locate it.

Street Stall or Shop: What to Buy Where
Bapu Bazaar works best when you know which things to pick up from the pavement and which to buy inside a shop.
| Buy from street stalls | Better from shops |
|---|---|
| Bangles, hair accessories, oxidised jewellery | Bandhej and leheriya sarees, dupattas and suits |
| Everyday mojaris and juttis | Heavy embroidered or wedding mojaris |
| Potli bags, pouches, small gifts | Jaipuri razai and bedsheets |
| Souvenirs, puppets, toys | Block-print dress material in bulk |
| Seasonal items (diye, rakhis, kites) | Kurtis, lehengas and ready-made clothes |
The rule of thumb: small, low-cost and seasonal items are of great value at stalls. For fabric, clothes and razai, a shop lets you see the full range, check quality and ask for alterations or a bill.
How to Shop at Bapu Bazaar's Street Stalls
Carry cash. Most food stalls and food carts prefer cash. Have a few small notes on hand.
Walk once, then buy. There may be multiple stalls selling the same item. Make a comparison of two or three before making a decision.
Bargain politely. The price is often not set. Make a counter offer that is lower, and then agree in the middle. Don't argue, smile!
Buy more, ask for less. Multiple bangle sets or gifts from multiple stalls will result in a more generous combined price.
Check before you pay. Do some mojaris on both feet and inspect the stitching. Search for loose stones on bangles and jewellery. Check zips and clasps on bags.
Mind your belongings. The evenings are full and crowded, keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket or zipped bag.
